Located in the heart of Toronto, the Dundas Square Barbers stands out with its distinctive design and prime location. The owner's vision of a classic barber shop with heavy molding and historical renovations was brought to life by Nivek Remas. However, due to the limitations of the site, traditional applications of molding were not feasible. This challenge led to a reimagining of the design, with the molding being incorporated on the ceiling and upper dado in the main space, rather than the walls.
One of the standout features of the Dundas Square Barbers is its flooring design, which is visible from across Dundas Square. Taking inspiration from the classic barber pole stripes, a radial pattern was created using the mirror columns as a base point. This unique flooring design adds a touch of nostalgia and draws attention to the barbershop.
To create a dynamic environment, Nivek Remas departed from the static station layout typically found in barber shops. Instead, floating stations were created around mirror columns, adding movement and energy to the space. This innovative approach maximized the use of the 850 sq.ft. area, creating a visually enlarged and layered design.
The realization of the design involved the use of advanced technology and collaboration with local companies. Custom molding was created using EPS foam core, which provided a lighter and more cost-effective alternative to traditional particle board substrate. The ombre wallpaper and mirror, which required meticulous trial and error, were produced in collaboration with Metro Wallcovering and Accura Glass, respectively.
Despite the challenges faced during the construction process, including delays due to COVID-19 restrictions and material shortages, the Dundas Square Barbers has emerged as a unique and visually stunning space. The combination of traditional elements, innovative design, and attention to detail has resulted in a barbershop that stands out in its location and captures the essence of a classic barber shop with a modern twist.
The Dundas Square Barbers project was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2021 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the space, which meets professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
With its blend of tradition and innovation, the Dundas Square Barbers is not just a barbershop; it is a testament to the power of design to create unique and memorable experiences.
